Barney Oldfield Rolling Over in his Grave-Fantasy Insight Brickyard
Back in Barney Oldfield's day the Indianapolis Motor Speedway was the proving ground of American technology. It didn't take long until the European powers in engine design were using Indy to test their engines. But back in those early days of the Brickyard if you told Ford, Maserati, and Mercedes that races would be dominated by a Japanese brand they would have laughed you off of the premises! But now Honda is the only engine at the Indianapolis 500 and Toyota is starting to show supremacy in the world of NASCAR.
Making the Grade - Midterm Report Card
Each week I get out the red marking pencil and hand out my grades for the week. There is only one driver picked for each letter grade from "A" through F." Since the Cup drivers were enjoying a week off, this week I hand out midterm grades. (Just like colleges our midterm doesn't come exactly halfway through the year either!) This week I will hand out grades for each organization. Our grades are not against the curve so I don't care if a team has more money and people to work with… a grade is a grade on this test! In addition I will give my outlook on where each team is headed. Enjoy and feel free to send in your grades so we can use them on the "Quick Change" radio show on Wednesday night.
SOZ says: It's the "Soft Pass" driving fans away from NASCAR
7/22/08: SOZ Studios, MI - By Mike Harper "SOZ" (RaceTalkRadio.com)
Imagine sitting in your living room enjoying the big football game on Sunday afternoon when your favorite team's defensive line steps aside and allows the opposition's running back to score a touchdown. Can you imagine that happening in today's NFL?
How about the pitcher on your favorite professional baseball team throwing up easy softballs allowing the opposition free hits all in an effort to save his energy for the ninth inning. Would this be acceptable or smart?
Or this scenario, your favorite Sprint Cup Series driver moving over and allowing a faster driver to pass without any difficulty. Can you image this happening?
Free the 20
It just seems so unfair for Tony Stewart to go searching for a new number after so many years. He has become quite attached to the No. 20 and now just because he is changing teams he has to pick a new number! Fans don't cheer for the car they cheer for the driver! The driver makes the number famous NOT the car! Drivers should be allowed to take their number with them when they pack up their desks. It's only fair! Tony doesn't have children so I am sure his number is like his own child! Come on Joe and JD Gibbs…FREE THE 20!

News and Rumors from Jayski - SOZ says:
Update Monday, July 7th
Issue No. 1: Mark Martin has signed a two-year agreement to drive for Hendrick Motorsports beginning in 2009. Martin will race the full 2009 Sprint Cup schedule in the #5 Kellogg’s/CARQUEST Chevy, becoming teammates with #24-Jeff Gordon, #48-Jimmie Johnson and #88-Dale Earnhardt Jr. It will mark his first full season of Cup competition since 2006, when he finished ninth in points.
SOZ Says: I thought Mark was going to retire! Hey lets face it, Mark can still race with these guys and I say WAY TO GO MARK! While I'm not thrilled about the "comeback tour" I am happy to know that Mark will have one last shot in great equipment to go after his first championship. It's too bad for Casey Mears who is out looking for a job, but my guess is he'll end up somewhere like RCR or Penske.
Issue No. 2: During opening day technical inspection Thursday at Daytona International Speedway, NASCAR seized the #1 DEI Chevy driven by Martin Truex Jr. NASCAR said that during the tech inspection the car did not fit the roof templates.
SOZ Says: Truex was not happy with his team and said “That shouldn’t happen at this level of auto racing." Truex is expected to leave this team at the end of the season and I'm thinking this doesn't help DEI's case to keep him. But as one person close to the situation said, maybe this was the teams way of letting Truex know that they are not happy with him. Truex and the team may be penalized and fined with a 100 points basically dropping Truex to 18th in points from 14th and only 88 out of the Chase.
Issue No. 3: With 71 employees already in the unemployment line, Chip Ganassi Racing is looking to cut another 30 jobs from its stock-car operations, several current employees said Saturday. The team shut down the #40 Dodge earlier this week after it wasn't able to find a sponsor for driver Dario Franchitti.
SOZ Says: This is a shame. Ganassi is a great racing mind and he and his managament haven't been able to succeed in NASCAR. The 40 car has been around a long time and to just shut it down is heartbreaking! Even big names like Juan Montoya and Dario Franchitti couldn't save this car/team and that amazes me. With UPS, Office Depot, Cheerios, and the US ARMY all making sponsorship moves this season I can't believe the brass at Ganassi Racing couldn't land sponsorship. This tells me this team is quickly fading away and I wouldn't be shocked it they are out of NASCAR after the 2009 season.
