Australian Bull in the Mexican China Shop - Making the Grade Mexico
Heading all the way down to Mexico City for a race is likely to make anyone go loco. But apparently the majority of the drivers in the Nationwide Series race at Mexico City had Mexican Jumping Beans in their uniforms! This road race looked more like Saturday night at the County Fair bumper cars than a race among some of the best right and left turners in the world. Leading the way among the over anxious drivers was Australian Marcos Ambrose. On the way to his career best second place finish Ambrose got into several contenders including Boris Said. The tape of this race can be used as the DO NOT portion of an instructional video of the DOES and DO NOTS of road course racing.
Race Grade C
Before NASCAR heads back down to Mexico City there better be some major improvements in the track. The decorative walls need to be replaced by something that offers better protection to the racers. Several red flags and many full course cautions kept this race from developing a better rhythm.
F for Adrian Fernandez's Luck
One of the hometown heroes was putting on one heck of a show racing from the back to the front before he got dumped. This was the second year in a row that Fernandez was taken out of the race by a competitor over driving the course.
D for Marcos Ambrose
Usually a second place finish will earn you a high grade. But Marcos Ambrose gets docked two full letter grades for driving beyond all realms of common sense getting into several competitors. It is a good thing for Marcos that Boris Said will cool off before Montreal!
C for Ruben Pardo
Sometimes the finishing order is a bit deceiving on how a driver's race went. If you see 18th place by Pardo's name you might wonder why he earns a mention. But until the closing laps Pardo was in contention for the win. After getting the worse of a late race tussle with Scott Wimmer, Pardo would miss the chance to win.
B for Steven Wallace
With all the hype piled on the son of the former NASCAR champion you would think Steven Wallace had already posted ten or fifteen top tens by now. But his tenth place finish at Mexico City was his very first career top ten at this level. For once the younger Wallace managed to keep his head on straight all race and bring the car home.
A for Kyle Busch
Any track any time Kyle Busch has to be considered the favorite to win in Nationwide Series action. Now the only question is if Kyle will fill in the gaps in his schedule to run for the point's title. Do the Toyota engines have an advantage? Maybe so but the biggest advantage the brand has is Kyle Busch behind the steering wheel!
