Haas Bow Tie Will Not Fit Stewart

4/25/08: SOZ Studios, MI - By Dennis Michelsen "DMIC" (RaceTalkRadio.com)

Do you know how to tell when a NASCAR rumor is a bunch of buffalo chips? The easiest way to tell is when so many writers and broadcasters jump on the bandwagon to tell you that this driver or that driver is definitely heading to such and such team. If you have a short memory may I try to talk some sense into you this week? DALE EARNHARDT JR HEADED TO RCR. Does anyone remember that headline? The track record of certain writers in breaking stories is pitiful. Even when the next wave of articles with more exclusive sources hit it is just another case of media misdirection NASCAR writing style. The Haas bow tie will not fit Tony Stewart!

Two Time Champion to Go or Go Home Team

Unless Tony Stewart wins the championship this season there is no guarantee that the past champion provisional will be worth a lick to him next season. In this day and age of shuffling points there might be two past champs in front of him for that honor. Even if Stewart were the most recent champion on the outside looking in why would he invest his fortune in a race team instead of more dirt tracks? Tony Stewart has not been a huge fan of NASCAR's rulings or management over the years. As a driver he can deal with the rules. But as an owner he would have to start playing nicer with others. Owning a team requires being richer than your average driver anyway! Still don't believe me that this whole Haas rumor is bunk? HAAS RACING HAS ONE TOP FIVE FINISH IN 235 CAREER CUP STARTS!

Drivers as Owners Always Fail

The last driver to be a successful team owner was Ricky Rudd. He never won more than two races as a team owner during a season in his entire career. Rudd's best finish in the Cup points was fifth place in his first year as an owner. If Tony Stewart wanted to own part of his own team wouldn't Gibbs Racing be likely to offer that deal to keep him? Tony Stewart wants to win more races and more championships before he retires. Stewart is a student of the sport and knows that in the last thirty years in NASCAR's Cup division that only two guys won in a car they owned! The last to do that was in 1992 with the late great Alan Kulwicki getting the job done. NASCAR racing has changed dramatically since 1992! Why would Tony Stewart take that headache on with so many other things he loves to do? Team ownership at the Cup level would keep him too busy to enjoy Eldora and enjoy his dirt racing and owning. Tony Stewart doesn't want to shill for sponsors while running 25th every week…Tony wants to win races!

Stewart Heading to Richard Childress Racing

If Tony Stewart does head back to Chevy he will be wearing the bow tie for Richard Childress Racing! The folks in charge of working the media on Tony Stewart's behalf have done a great job of creating a diversion with the rumors of ownership at Haas Racing. The more likely scenario if there is any truth to the Haas rumor is for Tony Stewart to stay at Gibbs Racing while taking on part ownership at Haas Racing and running their car in the Nationwide Series. But for Tony Stewart to leave one of the top teams in NASCAR racing to go to one of the lowliest is the craziest rumor in many years! Let me remind you that RCR has not announced a driver for their fourth team yet despite the rumors of Bobby Labonte headed that way. Let me also remind you how many writers and broadcasters were wrong in the Dale Earnhardt Jr derby last season! How many people got the Hendrick story right at this time in the Junior "Silly Season" shuffle last year? If Stewart ends up back in a Chevy next year he is 99% more likely to be teammates with Kevin Harvick than Scott Riggs!

How many "sources" got the Dale Earnhardt Jr move right last season? The rush to get the story first has made getting the story right less important in the world of NASCAR racing. Writers and broadcasters are being played by their inside sources in order to create a diversion while the real business is going on behind the scenes. Drivers' reps love playing the game to leverage the best deal for their clients. Newsflash race fans…that is THEIR job! Yes Tony Stewart might end up leaving Gibbs Racing to go back to Chevy. He is incredibly brand loyal and GM is his home. But heading to Haas Racing would be career suicide and Tony Stewart is smarter than that. Tony Stewart has a contract through 2009 and Gibbs Racing will have a big say in anything that happens. The Haas Racing bow tie will not fit Tony Stewart!
