The Godfather of Racing Provides Sirius Entertainment
Give Dave Moody's radio show on Sirius Satellite Radio one listen and you will be hooked! Listeners of NASCAR races on MRN radio know that Moody knows his NASCAR. But unless you listen in during the commercial breaks at the track on your scanner you have not heard the REAL Dave Moody until you listen to Sirius Speedway every weekday afternoon! Too many sports radio shows think that their credibility covering the sport will be sacrificed if they add too much humor. Thank goodness Dave Moody doesn't worry about such things!
More Than Just NASCAR
When Sirius Satellite Radio channel 128 became the NASCAR channel I was worried what this would do to Sirius Speedway. Even though Dave Moody works in NASCAR, his love of racing extends to many other types of racing! Yes the show is NASCAR heavy as you would expect on NASCAR's official channel, but the conversation and interviews do cover all aspects of racing. This is a formula that works!
The Godfather of Racing
In addition to hosting Sirius Speedway, Dave Moody is the lead turn announcer for MRN Radio's NASCAR broadcasts. Race fans for years have heard his deep voice bellow, "Trouble turn three!" But unless you own a Sirius Satellite Radio you have not heard Dave Moody at his finest. The pride and joy of Barre, Vermont; Moody has worked with MRN since 1993. The reason the MRN race broadcasts work is the chemistry between the various announcers. That is also the reason for Sirius Speedway's success! Without the right foils for Dave Moody's humor the show would fail.
Suzy Q Armstrong
Listeners of the show might not know how long Suzy Armstrong has been involved with motorsports. For twenty years Suzy Q has worked in this industry, since 2003 working and laughing with Dave Moody on Sirius Speedway. Suzy got her start at Oregon Speedway serving as track announcer and public relations director for over a decade. Along the way she has covered NASCAR, Champ Car, IMSA, and other racing events. She joined MRN in 2000 and the rest is history!
Sirius Speedway Legends
One of the best features on Sirius Speedway is the weekly interview of racing legends. Heard every Friday evening, Dave Moody goes in-depth with racers that the fans love. A few weeks ago drag racing legend "Big Daddy' Don Garlits was featured. Even though this interview was several years old it was very enjoyable! Big Daddy talked about his many innovations in the sport including the "Traction Knob" that did absolutely nothing, except intimidate and confound his foes! The brilliance of Dave Moody's interviewing skills are on display in these legendary interviews. Switching gears through historical events, humorous stories, and sentimental moments race fans get the full flavor of these racing legends! In the case of Don Garlits the story about the accident that took his foot left a lump in my throat. Also injured in the accident was a fan in the stands. Because one of the best reconstructive doctors in the business was flown in to care for Garlits, the young man's arm was saved. This kid would become part of Garlits' crew one year later.
Legendary Callers
One of the toughest parts of any racing show host's duties is handling the occasional annoying or boring phone caller. This is another arena where Dave Moody is at his best! Using sound effects and sarcasm the Godfather keeps the show rolling even when the caller tries so hard to derail it! A recent caller commented about sending Dave an email about the upcoming "Horseshoes in the Snow" event. After telling the tale of what the event was all about, Moody chimed in with sarcasm dripping from his voice, "I can't imagine why I didn't jump all over that one." Whenever a fan goes over the edge and sparks a nerve watch out. A recent fan ripped Tony Stewart and threw out the age-old argument that the fans pay his salary. An annoyed Moody exploded saying, "Get over yourself! You are giving yourself too much credit!" You could almost sense listeners all over the country applauding Dave's tirade as this annoying caller was left in the dust! Another caller asked if NASCAR was planning to do anything about Cup drivers invading the Nationwide Series. Moody's response was simple, "They are taking decisive action and are going to allow it!" When another caller, after blowing an attempted joke told Moody his show was the best four hours on radio Dave quipped, "Well that used to be the case." Whether it is the sound of the black helicopters or the thumping sound (Beating a dead horse) or just comments oozing with sarcasm, Dave Moody is quick at the draw with the perfect response.
Jan from Arizona
While Moody's sarcasm is often on display when an annoying, rude, or boring caller is on the air his softer side sometimes comes out too. Jan in Arizona is a Sirius Speedway regular calling in almost every show. Just how addicted is she to the show? Jan recently called in from the recovery room after surgery to install a defibulator device in her chest! Dave and Suzy Q's concerns for Jan's health were evident during the call. Of course another sidekick told her she missed a Kasey Kahne interview almost sending her into defib! The softer side of the Godfather was clearly on display as he scolded Jan to wait until she was back home to call again.
Wrapping It Up
Sirius Speedway gives listeners their fix of racing news but also brings a laugh or two along the way. This show should be required listening for any radio hosts that take themselves too seriously! The Godfather of Racing holds court along with his sidekicks every day. Tune into the show weekdays from 3-7pm ET for your racing fix on Sirius NASCAR Channel 128.
