Impounding Problems in NASCAR

5/1/08: SOZ Studios, MI - By Dennis Michelsen "DMIC" (RaceTalkRadio.com)

Why of why does NASCAR insist on having impound races at the highest level of the sport? All this does is add more question marks to the weekend for every team! The big money teams can use all their clever gadgets back at the shop to diagnose how the cars will react to changing weather and other variables. But the best test for man and machine (and tires) is to put plenty of laps on the board on practice. The current procedures are IMPOIUND problems in NASCAR with the new COT.

Cost Savings My…

The first time NASCAR makes a change that really saves teams money will be the first time they make a change that really saves teams money! Even when the idea is a good one teams will find another way to spend the cash that NASCAR just saved them. Don't believe me? Ask Hoosier Tire how many pieces of rubber they sold the big money teams since testing was outlawed in the sport! NASCAR's job isn't to save teams money anyway it is to provide rules that lead to better and safer racing. If NASCAR's secret police figured out a way to police every racetrack sanctioned and unsanctioned teams would just spend millions on test tracks!

Goodyear Needs Laps

Goodyear's engineers have suggested that producing the perfect tire for the new COT design will just take time. What it really will take is laps! Why not give teams more laps to get used to the tires that are brought to the track every week? That way Goodyear will also get a thorough testing of their product that can help them predict whether a harder or softer compound is needed. Sometimes in the heat of racing drivers abuse their tires more than they do in practice. The practice laps might give a good test of how the tires will respond to normal treatment. Goodyear would benefit from more laps of practice, which is another vote in favor of no impound races.

What Works in Nationwide and Trucks…

Nationwide and Craftsman Truck teams NEED impound procedures to help them save money! In those series the impound procedures in place have proven to save teams money. Since the teams in NASCAR's non-Cup series do work on much smaller budgets the idea works just fine. But NASCAR hasn't set up a Chase for the Championship in Nationwide and Craftsman Trucks so why use those series' impound procedures in Cup? What is good for one series doesn't necessarily work in NASCAR's premier division.

Conclusion

NASCAR is having trouble selling tickets this season with the weak economy. Giving racing fans one more chance to see their favorite drivers in action is another way to bring fans to the support division race. Granted the stands are usually pretty empty so this argument might be weak, but some race fans do enjoy watching "Happy Hour" practice especially. In addition to any more tickets you might sell the television coverage does get casual fans aware that a race is coming up. You might just hook a few channel surfers that will come back the next day. For many reasons NASCAR is IMPOUNDING problems with the new car design by having impound procedures in place at some tracks!
