Richard Childress Racing Going to the Dogs in 2009

5/12/08: SOZ Studios, MI - By Dennis Michelsen "DMIC" (RaceTalkRadio.com)

When the rumors started hitting that Bobby Labonte was headed to Richard Childress Racing for 2009 and beyond I just didn't see that happening. Even when Labonte's sponsor left Petty Enterprises for RCR I still didn't see Bobby following them to RCR. While sponsorship is up in the air for Labonte and he has not officially signed with Petty for next season I think he will be back. Childress would love to have Tony Stewart in his fourth Chevy next season but Tony will probably stay put at Joe Gibbs Racing. That leaves RCR still looking for a top-notch driver for next season and today I am hear to tell you who that will be with certainty! Drum roll please…Ryan Newman is headed to RCR for next season! Ryan Newman would be a perfect fit with RCR. The only thing holding Newman back is his equipment and he will be able to shine in RCR Chevys! Who let the dogs out? Richard Childress Racing is going to the dogs in 2009 and beyond!

The Other Dog Whisperer

Even on the 2% likelihood that I am wrong on the Ryan Newman to RCR rumor for next season, the other major free agent driver after Tony Stewart is also a dog lover. So even if I get the wrong "breed" it will be a dog lover in that seat next year. Hamburger Helper better start making a dog food variety because if Newman isn't in that seat then Greg Biffle will be headed to RCR instead. The post race interview with Greg Biffle after the Dodge Challenger 500 at Darlington Raceway makes it obvious Biffle is not pleased with his team. Once again Biffle's team managed to grab defeat from the jaws of victory due to equipment issues. What in the heck is happening with lug nuts over at Roush-Fenway Racing? Did they import some special lugs from China that have a tendency to self loosen? Greg Biffle is not pleased and Roush can't afford to lose a great driver like Greg Biffle! The other dog whisperer is not happy right now with his cars either.

Penske and Ganassi Lack Focus on NASCAR Side

Roger Penske and Chip Ganassi continued their battle at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on pole day. Both guys want to be the king of racing and seem to have their programs involved in a variety of racing series. But in the past 10 years Roger Penske hasn't had one of his drivers crack the top five in points! Chip Ganassi has not had a driver finish in the top five at the end of the season since his first year in 2001! Congratulations guys you are the kings of open wheel racing. Now can you explain to me how you can throw so many millions of dollars at NASCAR and can't become one of the top five teams in the sport? In the meantime championships in darn near every other racing series have ended up in the trophy cabinets of Roger and Chip. Why is NASCAR such a tough nut for them to crack? Maybe it is a lack of focus on their NASCAR programs while they play with their open wheel cars.

Junior Watch and the Iran Hostage Crisis

This is race seventy-three of the Dale Earnhardt Jr drought in NASCAR's Cup division. Maybe it is not quite as scary or important as the Iran Hostage Crisis from November 4, 1979 to January 20, 1981 but I can't help making the comparison. For you youngsters that didn't live through that insanity, every night after the news Ted Koppel would come on the air with Nightline and lead with the number of days the hostage crisis had been going on. "The Iran Crisis…America Held Hostage Day" whatever is how that show started for its run of 444 days! On almost every NASCAR show we get that same count up for Dale Earnhardt Jr. This is week seventy-three of the Dale Earnhardt Jr winless crisis…welcome to NASCAR Now! That is how Alan Bestwick should start every show since ESPN seems to be beating this story to death. The Iran Hostage Crisis ended quickly after a new president was put into power in Washington. Thankfully Junior doesn't have to wait another 444 days for that to happen! Even the non Junior fans are hoping he wins so the media just shuts up about how long its been since Junior's last trip to Victory Lane!
