Is the New Bud Man Better Than Old Bud Man
- Making the Grade Pocono 1

6/10/08: SOZ Studios, MI - By Dennis Michelsen "DMIC" (RaceTalkRadio.com)

Once upon a time NASCAR raced 500 miles at Dover and came to their senses to shorten those races to 400 miles. The same needs to be done at Pocono! TNT decided that we needed an endless pre-race show that told us absolutely nothing! The Aerosmith wannabe that sings their theme song was awful! Bill Webber is a buffoon! Do we really need two races at Pocono anyway? One race at Pocono and one at Kentucky Speedway would be a huge improvement over two boring races at Pocono every year!

Race Grade C-

This race offered an interesting duel of strategy games among the Crew Chiefs but I can see that in Formula One! Sure there was a lot of passing back in the pack, which I luckily caught on "Race Buddy" since TNT seemed to be just in it for making pretty pictures with no concept of following the racing that was going on. Add in nasty heat and you have the recipe for a long day in the Pocono Mountains.

F for Keystone Kops in Pits

It is time for NASCAR to hire their own professional safety crews and medical staff to travel with the circuit every week! The fiasco when Juan Pablo Montoya's car was on fire should be the last straw for the drivers accepting the status quo. What if he had been knocked out and unable to get out of the car fast under his own power? Those two chuckleheads were a disgrace to all the hard working folks at tracks nationwide.

D for TNT Coverage

If race coverage were just about painting a pretty picture then TNT would be your choice. But NASCAR racing is about following the stories and the on-track action. Give a listen to any MRN radio broadcast and you will see how the flow of race coverage should go. When was the last time MRN missed a pass for the lead? When was the last time they gave you a boring broadcast? Bill Webber brings all of the announcers down to his low level and the director involved with Sunday's broadcast should be flogged immediately!

C for Jamie McMurray

An average driver soon to be looking for work earned an average grade.  End of story!

B for Red Bull Racing

Last season the two Red Bull Racing teams failed to qualify for 32 of the 72 races they entered and had a grand total of one top five finish! This season they have only missed three races all season and have already doubled their total of top fives. Brian Vickers is 17th in points and only 112 points from making the Chase for the Championship. AJ Allmendinger has two top 20 finishes in the last three races. Things are looking up for Team Red Bull Racing.

A for Kasey Kahne

All of a sudden this team has found a way to rally from adversity to win races! Despite starting the season with four top ten finishes in the first five races the team didn't look like a threat to win races. After being voted into the All Star main event and winning this team has won three times in the past four weeks. This time around a screw up on pit road sent Kasey Kahne to the back of the pack but hard driving and pit strategy would save the day! How many more wins can the new Bud Man get before the old Bud Man ends his winless drought?
