Racers Should Race
As long as Cup guys are allowed to race in others series they should enjoy all the racing they can fit into their schedules! When Kyle Busch wrecked early in the Pocono 500 it wasn't long until people started blaming his poor performance on his cross-country trips. Would you rather have your young star partying all night and showing up for the big race with a hangover? Racers race and for years guys have been fitting as many races into their schedules as possible! Kyle Busch is a racer and his accident at Pocono had nothing to do with his three-race excursion.
Other Reasons for Lack of Success
Kyle Busch was in a backup car and there was a reason that car wasn't the first choice for the team. Not all cars are built equal and while each piece Joe Gibbs Racing fields is top notch, a backup car is still not the car of choice for the race. Even more important was the fact Kyle Busch was starting the race in the back because of the backup car. Track position is vitally important at Pocono. Kyle Busch screwed up and it won't be the last time he wrecks this season. But there are other reasons than jet lag for those mistakes.
Road Trips Tougher Back in the Day
Can you imagine Bobby Allison or David Pearson being criticized for moonlighting back in the day? These guys would race three or four times a week and never have their performance in Cup affected. Even more amazing these guys often drove many hours to get to each race each day! Racers today get shuttled to a helicopter and then flown via private jet to the next city and then hop on another helicopter to get to the next track. They aren't even flying the plane they are taking a nap while also getting in IV to make sure they are hydrated. Racers should race and they are hardly roughing it on the road!
Kyle Busch Effect
If this guy was caught giving milk and cookies to kids or helping little old ladies across the street people would find something to complain about cause it involves Kyle Busch! Eddie Gossage gave him a black hat to wear at Texas Motor Speedway but that was not needed because a high percentage of the NASCAR fan and media population always see him wearing a black hat! This guy could have won all three races and people would find something to complain about. "He would have lapped the field but he was too tired to drive at his best." I suppose we can just call this the Kyle Busch Effect!
While I would like to see more driver development done in the Nationwide Series, it is amazing to see any driver in the top ten in all three series. Kyle Busch loves to race and there is no doubt that the No. 20 team is better prepared to get Joey Logano strong finishes after working with Kyle Busch. Other drivers such as Denny Hamlin and Carl Edwards also made the Nashville to Pocono trip but neither one of those guys were ripped for doing so. Bad performances happen and sometimes a coincidence does happen even in racing! Kyle Busch could get in even more trouble if he was bored and hanging out at the track the night before the race! Racers should race!
