Firecracker Fun - Making the Grade Daytona

7/8/08: SOZ Studios, MI - By Dennis Michelsen "DMIC" (RaceTalkRadio.com)

Even if you hate restrictor plate racing you have to admit that Saturday night's race was pretty entertaining. Like him or hate him you have to admit that Kyle Busch is having one of those dream seasons to remember. NASCAR racing gives us fans more to compliment or complain about each week than any other sport! The passion of the fans for this sport is incredible! Racing in Daytona in July defies logic because of the extreme humidity but it is tradition. Firecracker fun on the Fourth of July sure gave us a weekend full of great racing from the World Center of Racing.

Race Grade A
Admittedly I am not a fan of restrictor plate racing but I was thoroughly entertained on Saturday night. Yes I would prefer to see a rules package that allows drivers to pass without a push from behind. But restrictor plate racing is what it is and the version we saw this weekend was entertaining!

F for Complainers
NASCAR gives the fans a decent race and people whine. No NASCAR should NOT have thrown the caution flag when Jeff Gordon spun just to be consistent because the fans DO deserve a shot at seeing a green flag finish. Yes the safety of the drivers is important but every restart is dangerous and if a driver spins out of the way let them race to the finish!

D for Biffle and Sadlers' Luck
Has anyone in the history of sports had worse luck than Greg Biffle or Elliott Sadler? If you see either guy walking down the street during stormy weather get the heck away from these guys! "Gloom, despair, and agony on me. Deep dark depression, excessive misery; If it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all." Now you know which song Greg and Elliott sing during NASCAR karaoke night!

C for Jeff Gordon
The finish is not what the team needed but Gordon and his team must have been happy that the team actually raced strong all night long! Jeff Gordon was quick to take the blame for the spin. Steve Letarte is starting to figure out what Jeff needs to make this new car design race fast.

B for Roush Racing
Throw away the cursed team (Greg Biffle) and the underachieving team (Jamie McMurray) and Roush Racing has to be ecstatic about their performance this weekend! Placing three of your drivers in the top five in a restrictor plate race is fantastic. Kyle Busch might be grabbing the headlines but Roush Racing is getting the job done this year! Speedways have always been where Roush drivers shine and we will see more wins from Kenseth, Edwards, and Biffle and the first win by Ragan soon.

A for Kyle Busch
The driver fans love to hate is having the kind of dream season that racing historians will be talking about 50 years from now! NASCAR is likely to change their format for bonus points after this season. Each and every week drivers and crew chiefs come to the track planning how to beat Kyle Busch! Six wins in Cup and twelve overall in NASCAR's touring divisions as the crossed flags for the season are showing is an incredible start!
