Making the Grade Michigan 2
Michigan International Speedway is one of those tracks that the drivers love and the fans either love or hate. Races at MIS are weird. One guy will often pull away from the field and turn the middle part of the race into a snoozer, but towards the end of the race the rubber band pulls them back to the field. (Or a caution or two) Sometimes I think the fans that love this place love it more for the infield party than the racing itself. The drivers love it because they can pick any groove they want. (Except for the wall as Junior discovered) Overall this was a rather entertaining weekend of racing with lots of plot twists and turns.
Race Grade: B+
If you like drama and crazy plot twists then you liked the race at MIS this weekend. The race was also a snapshot of what this season has become with the battle between Roush and his Fords versus Gibbs and his Toyotas. Roush won this battle but will they win the war? Carl Edwards and Kyle Busch are the class of Cup in 2008 and I hope the Chase for the Championship comes down to these two guys at the end of the year!
F for Joe Gibbs Racing Nationwide Debacle
While this feature is usually reserved for Cup racing the debacle in the Nationwide Series with JGR was so stupid it deserves the "F" this week! How can any one person be this stupid to think they could get this past the NASCAR inspectors? Actually this had to involve at least three people and probably four or more!
D for Hendrick Motorsports
How the mighty have fallen! When Casey Mears is battling Jimmie Johnson for the team best in 17th and 18th position you know it's been a bad week. Junior smacking into the wall was one thing but bad pit stops are becoming the norm on the No. 24. Seeing the No. 24 and No. 48 smack into each other and ruin each other's day was crazy stuff indeed.
C for Carl's Flips
Under rotation due to the helmet and then not sticking the landing during the second flip shows that Carl needs some coaching!
B for David Ragan
No sophomore slump for Mister Ragan! His strong performance combined with several Chase eligible drivers stubbing their toes has put the Chase for the Championship well within the reach of the No. 6 team. The old driver of the 6 Mark Martin should be proud of this young man because David Ragan is doing the No. 6 car proud!
A for Carl Edwards
Despite being a wide open race track the statistics tell us that it is tough to win from mid pack or worse at MIS. Carl Edwards and his Crew Chief Bob Osborne have shown that this is a two team race for the Championship! If Cousin Carl can grab another win and not see Kyle Busch win one of the last three races he can go into the Chase close enough to win this championship.
