More Proof that Tony Eury Jr Must Go - (And Other Idling Thoughts from the Weekend)

8/25/08: SOZ Studios, MI - By Dennis Michelsen "DMIC" (RaceTalkRadio.com)

Hasn't Rick Hendrick seen enough? What more needs to happen before he makes a move to fire Tony Eury Jr? Once again the greatest driver in the history of NASCAR struggled at Bristol Motor Speedway on Saturday night because his Crew Chief couldn't get the job done! Clearly it is Eury Jr's fault that Dale Earnhardt Jr jumped the start of the Sharpie 500 and ruined his driver's chance to win the race. Poor pit strategy at Watkins Glen cost Junior a win earlier this season and now this! Dale Earnhardt Jr's only win came despite another lousy pit call when Eury Jr left Junior no other option than turning the car off during cautions because they didn't give Dale Junior enough gas to finish the race. How many more poor decisions will be tolerated by Mr. Hendrick? Other Crew Chiefs in the sport are held to higher standards than Mr. Tony Eury Jr. Once again on Saturday night Eury Jr cost Dale Earnhardt Jr a chance at victory! When will this insanity end? Bristol was more proof that Tony Eury Jr must go now.

Editor's Note: Dennis was rushed to the emergency room right after completion of this article where Doctors hope to be able to remove his tongue from his cheek…we will keep you posted!

Nothing Wrong with Bristol
It will be interesting to see how other pundits and the fans feel about what they just saw over the weekend at Bristol Motor Speedway. Can anyone really complain about the weekend of racing we saw? The progressive banking has allowed drivers to pass without JUST drop kicking their competition. Is it considered boring when drivers race side-by-side for lap after lap at Richmond? After last year's races we heard a lot of people say that management ruined Bristol. How can you ruin a track by making it better for racing? I suppose if all you came for was to see carnage you might be able to come up with an argument. But if you didn't love what you saw this week at Bristol Motor Speedway then you aren't a real NASCAR fan! Short track racing at its very best is what we saw at BMS. The Craftsman Truck race on Wednesday was the best race this decade! The Nationwide and Cup races gave us lots of action even without a lot of passes for the lead on Saturday night. There is nothing wrong with Bristol!

Two Man Race
Just a few years before this silly Chase for the Championship format screwed up NASCAR racing, by this time of the season the Championship was usually narrowed down to two drivers. The cream of the crop would rise to the top by the time the series headed back to Bristol. This season unless Kyle Busch or Carl Edwards win the championship my attitude will be…WHO CARES! Fourteen of the twenty-four races have been won by Kyle and Carl. They are the only two drivers in double-digits of top five finishes this year. When they reset the points after Richmond any of the twelve drivers can win in the ten lap dash. Maybe that's what the fans want but five of the current Chase eligible drivers have yet to win a race this year! Yes I know some seasons the eventual Champion only won one race, but at least they posted lots of top five finishes! One of the current Chase drivers only has four top five finishes. Is that Championship material? Two drivers have risen above the rest this season!

Rising Star Ragan
If you had polled the so-called experts this season you were more likely to hear the opinion that David Ragan was likely to be the driver let go by Roush-Fenway Racing when they needed to snip a team after next year. Very few expected Ragan to be right there knocking on the door to the Championship Chase in his second season! Just two years ago he was compared to a feather without darts. Now he is on the bubble to make the playoffs. Partnering this talented young driver with Crew Chief Jimmy Fennig was pure genius! The results did not come right away but two of Ragan's three top ten finishes came in the last ten races last season. Consistency has been the key to his improvement and next season look for this exciting young driver to be racing for top fives and wins more often!
