False Start to Chase - Making the Grade New Hampshire 2
New Hampshire Speedway is better than it used to be years ago but this is still not the place to start the Playoff Chase! We need a free for all of passing and great racing not single file racing on a super tight one mile track. At Loudon someone else's mess becomes yours in a hurry and can change the complex of the championship quickly. Perhaps Bruton Smith will have one of his usual over the top ideas and transform this place into a high speed short track! Can you imagine the Chase for the Championship starting at larger version of Bristol with progressive banking and side by side racing? The race at Loudon wasn't all boring but it was still a bit of a false start to the Chase.
Race Grade: B-
There was enough drama with the Chase contenders having difficulty early and often but that was about it. They need to seriously consider tearing this place up and transforming it into a 7/8ths of a mile track with progressive banking! Starting the Chase off with single file racing is boring with a capital "B-"
F for Matt Kenseth's Luck
Trouble seems to find this team, although they often do enough to get themselves in bad positions too. Restarts on single-groove tracks like Loudon are always nerve racking. When you have guys down a lap going three and four wide there will be trouble brewing! Kenseth was in the middle of the storm and got nailed again this week.
D for Kyle Busch
After cruising into the postseason as the driver to beat the No. 18 team beat themselves on Sunday! Kyle's own hustle cost him trouble as he spun the broken car. Racing hard to get back into the game disaster struck again when he spun and was smacked around by two cars spinning well after the fact. Now this team will have to learn how to play catch up after leading the way for so many weeks.
C for David Reutimann
Coming off his career best finish David Reutimann backed it up with a better effort than any of his teammates at Loudon on Sunday. While his teammates were unable to stay on the lead lap Reutimann was able to finish 15th. It makes you wonder how good he could be in a car that was more competitive.
B for Jeff Burton
Doesn't it seem as if this team and driver should be sponsored by Lockheed-Martin? Jeff Burton is the stealth fighter of NASCAR! Each week it doesn't matter where Burton starts a race he is invisible most of the day. But when they start getting ready to make out the checks at the end of the day you look up and Jeff Burton has snuck into the top ten! Unless someone gets really hot in the Chase that formula might win a championship for AT&T in their final year in Sprint Cup action!
A for Greg Biffle
Last week I was asked on a radio show who I would pick for the Championship if I couldn't take one of the big three. I was almost amazed with myself when the name Greg Biffle popped out. My theory was that the Biff is a streak hitter and can reel off a great ten race streak sometimes. Of course this team can also snag defeat from the Jaws of Victory easier than anyone else. Yes indeed folks Greg Biffle is the Chicago Cubs of NASCAR! Maybe like my Cubs this will be the year Biffle does win it all too!
