At Least Dorothy Saw a Great Finish - Making the Grade Kansas
Have you ever been to Kansas? (Raise your hands) Ok this question goes out to all of those people with hands raised high…why did Dorothy want to get back there so bad? The Kansas Speedway is an amazing facility! The people are great and this place handles traffic flow in and out of the facility better than any other track I have been to over the years. But these multi-purpose stadiums for racing have as much charm as the old multi-purpose stadiums we used to have for baseball and football! I don't have a clue why Dorothy wanted to get back to see this race but at least she saw a great finish!
Race Grade: C+
Until the exciting closing laps this race was in close competition with watching my neighbor rake leaves for most exciting moment of Sunday! The drivers seem to love this place which usually means the fans will not like the television version of the race! Sitting in the stands I am sure it was an exciting race but watching at home this was just another cookie cutter race on another cookie cutter track with another cookie cutter winner! Only Carl Edwards' amazing move to try to win the race made it worth watching.
F for Joe Gibbs Racing
How can the most dominant team in the regular season lay so many eggs in the postseason? Is there a curse to rival the famous goat curse for the Chicago Cubs or the Babe Ruth curse for the Boston Red Sox? The BoSox found a way to beat their curse and maybe this is the year of the Cubs. One thing for sure this is NOT the year for Joe Gibbs Racing to win a championship!
D for Brian Vickers
Is there anyone Brian Vickers didn't run into on Sunday? One thing for sure there was a lot of Home Depot Orange on the Red Bull Toyota after Sunday's race! Looking back three years from now I wonder if Red Bull will wonder why they didn't keep AJ Allmendinger instead of Brian Vickers. Right now Vickers is much better but AJ has an enormous upside potential.
C for Dale Earnhardt Jr
Wave goodbye to the hopes for a Championship Junior Nation! Dale Earnhardt Jr and his No. 88 team have been average in the Chase's first three races. It will take much more than average to beat the one-two-three punch of Johnson, Edwards, and Biffle. Junior fans should also become Cub fans cause they too are used to the phrase "Wait until next year" when September changes to October!
B for Jimmie Johnson
Once again the No. 48 team is hot as the weather starts to cool off. The lineup of Chase tracks is ideal for Jimmie Johnson and his Crew Chief Chad Knaus. Three Chase races and three top five finishes shows this team is the one to beat as they try for their three-peat! They didn't do anything spectacular on Sunday at Kansas, just ground out another win and moved to the top of the points.
A for Carl Edwards
This is one of those rare weekends where the winning driver does NOT get the highest grade! When Carl Edwards flew into the final turn and knew he would have to use the wall as a cushion to get past Jimmie Johnson that made me a huge Cousin Carl fan! Just one little misstep and he could have ended up with a waded up race car and 18th place! Going for the win at all costs is what separates the real racers from the points racers!
