Not Such Sweet Music at Music City - Making the Grade Nashville
Not every song written in Nashville is a hit and not every race in NASCAR is a classic! The Nationwide Series race at Nashville Super Speedway was average at best but at least it was still a race for us to enjoy. Fans stayed away this week too. But even a clinker of a song can have an interesting chorus and this week we had a feel good story with Scott Wimmer winning for the first time in almost five years! It wasn't the sweetest music at Nashville this week.
Race Grade: C
Nashville Super Speedway learned an important lesson this week by not having another race as a warm up act for the Nationwide Series. The lack of rubber on the track might have been a contributing factor to the single file racing that we witnessed. But we did get another weekend of racing and that is always a good thing!
F for Brett Rowe's Luck
When something breaks only 9 laps into a 225-lap race your team either screwed up big time or you are living under the wrong sign. Brett Rowe's day ended with a puff of smoke and a big thump against the wall way too early on Saturday.
D for Track Cleanup
There seemed to be a communication gap between the track workers and NASCAR officials in the tower after the first caution in Saturday's Pepsi 300. On four occasions the race appeared to be ready to go green and four times the race was put back on caution. If they knew it would take 13 laps to clean up Brett Rowe's mess they would have thrown a red flag but somewhere the communication broke down.
C for Landon Cassill
This talented youngster from Cedar Rapids, Iowa needs more races to show us what he can do in a Nationwide Series car. Since he has spent most of his testing laps in the COT design for Hendrick Motorsports this race is not a test of what he can do if given the chance. While race fans love seeing Cup stars such as Dale Earnhardt Jr, Mark Martin, and Martin Truex in this car I want to see more of Landon Cassill!
B for Kelly Bires
Some bobbles in the pits cost this team a few positions in the Pepsi 300 but Kelly Bires showed he could compete against he best drivers in NASCAR! Bires is up to eighth in the Nationwide Series points after six races and is just 169 points out of the lead. When the top two drivers made the Chase for the Championship at the Cup level last season that is good company to keep!
A for Scott Wimmer
Yes the Holiday Inn Chevy is fast no matter who is in this car, but Scott Wimmer proved that he is capable of winning on any given Saturday. While other names are rumored for the fourth Cup ride at Richard Childress Racing, I am hoping Wimmer will get a shot at that ride instead. Given great equipment Scott Wimmer will produce great results at any level of NASCAR racing!
