Martinsville Bop - Making the Grade Martinsville Spring
Did we just witness the newest advertisement for Goodyear's new rain tires? Never have we seen so many laps in the rain in a NASCAR race but hooray to NASCAR for getting the whole race completed in miserable conditions! The famous hotdogs were being used as hand warmers with the dedicated fans in the stands all day. Five degrees cooler and we might have needed snow tires! While this race will not go into the books as an instant classic it was classic short track racing with the tempers the only thing that was heated up by the end of the day!
Race Grade: B
If they ever change Martinsville someone should get shot! We don't need progressive banking or changing to all concrete or any of the other ideas the fans have thrown out over the years. What we do need is classic NASCAR short track racing twice a year!
F for Matt Kenseth
The competition to make the playoffs has never been closer than this season! Throwing away two laps the way Matt Kenseth did on Sunday by spinning David Gilliland intentionally could come back to haunt him when twenty-six races are in the books. At the very least Matt make it look more like a brake issue next time!
D for Robby Gordon
Is there anyone Robby Gordon didn't hit on Sunday? Since he never led a lap I am thinking that the pace car was the only vehicle not to receive a donut from Robby Gordon over the course of the 500-lap race. It could have been even worse if his car wasn't in the garage for over 50 laps!
C for Dario Franchitti
A driver's first experience at Martinsville Speedway at the Cup level is always memorable. Usually it qualifies because of how many veteran drivers are irritated by your performance! Dario Franchitti faced his biggest challenge to date and he finished 22nd but also didn't irritate any of the cagey veterans at one of NASCAR's toughest tracks!
B for Jamie McMurray
Being outside of the top 35 looking in is not fun! It is even worse when you drive for one of the top teams in the sport. Jamie McMurray got up on the wheel and worked hard all weekend to make sure he wouldn't go to Texas Motor Speedway in the same predicament. His eighth place run was a mixture of great track position, good teamwork and smart driving!
A for Denny Hamlin
Denny Hamlin has had a top five car each and every race this season! But it appeared that his FedEx Toyota was cursed when they managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory on three of the first five races. This week Denny Hamlin managed to rally from a bad decision to pit and win in front of his home state fans! Look for this team to get on a roll now that they have that proverbial monkey off their back!
