NASCAR Fans Suggest 60-Yard Field for NFL
Imagine how much more scoring we would see if a football field was only sixty-yards long! Fans could be seated closer to the action and more points would be scored. Perhaps if baseball let NASCAR fans get involved in their rules we would see the baselines shortened by five feet to make the plays at first base even more exciting. Who cares that the dimensions of the baselines haven't changed in over a century, wouldn't that make the game more exciting? Just imagine how much fun better basketball will be when NASCAR fans are allowed to create the four and five point shots! Listen to NASCAR fans for five minutes and you will get the idea right away. We like to suggest changes to our sport like no other sports fans!
NASCAR Did Make Us This Way
Turn back the clock a few years and NASCAR seemed to make changes to the rules every week! If the Fords had an advantage then shave an eighth of an inch off their spoilers at the next down force track. Did the Bowtie Brigade dominate last week? No problem all you need to do is raise the front height of their cars by a half inch and screw them up to even the competition! The only good thing about the common body template rules is everything is even so NASCAR isn't tempted to tweak as much as they did before. But don't fret race fans there are still other ways they will change things so we can all complain!
Top 35 Rule
This is by far the leading whipping boy of all NASCAR rules. Browse any message board or tune into any radio show and it won't take more than ten minutes to hear someone give you their idea on how to fix this problem. The first thing to remember when making a rule change idea is to only go after rules that are considered in need of change. While race fans might think the Top 35 rule is the son of Satan, NASCAR finally found a way to do just what they wanted to do for many years! They designed a system that rewards loyalty to NASCAR without making franchises that lock out potential new teams. Isn't this a better alternative to having franchises? Anyone that follows some of the pathetic franchises in the stick and ball sports will realize this is better! At least there is chance for new teams to crack the lineup every season. Hey race fans…you might think you have a better idea but NASCAR isn't listening because they got what they wanted with this rule!
Chase for the Championship
Older NASCAR fans hate this rule almost as much as they hate the Top 35 rule but this is another rule that is here to stay! The even worse news is that IF there is change look for even more teams to be added to the playoffs. When was the last time you saw a sports league make their playoffs more exclusive? Even the NCAA basketball tourney is talking about expanding the field to 128 teams! I hate the Chase but I am bright enough to realize that it will not be going away any time soon. Fans call in or write about ideas for how to change the scoring to make sure the best driver and team get crowned Champion! NASCAR doesn't care about anything but keeping the suspense alive until that final lap. They have bought into the idea that a championship race that goes down to the final lap will boost ratings! Once again making it fair or more representative is not the idea the whole concept is to make it as close as possible.
Sport is Not Suffering
NASCAR is not shrinking quickly and it is not falling apart! Fans scream that the sky is falling and these bozos at NASCAR are getting just what they deserve with fans running away in droves with empty seats and falling ratings. First, these guys running the sport are not bozos they have built a sport from a regional sport into a worldwide phenomenon! NASCAR is the second most popular racing series on the planet after Formula One and by any measure the racing is much better. Yes I hate the closing of the old tracks too. But some of those actions did help grow the sport. When was the last time you went to Hickory Speedway? NASCAR used to race there too but the sport did outgrow the track! I would rather watch the weekly racing at Hickory or Tri-County or Caraway than cover the racing at some tracks on the NASCAR circuit. But NASCAR would never have grown into the mega-billion dollar industry it is today if they had stayed at all of those old tracks. Listen to some NASCAR fans talk and you would think NASCAR is ready to close the doors. The sport is not suffering!
No race fans I am not a huge fan of all of the changes that NASCAR has made over the years! They wanted Rockingham Speedway to fail and never considered letting them have better dates to see if the track could survive. I have never been a fan of the Chase for the Championship nor do I embrace the Top 35 rule. But I prefer those formats to some of the other possibilities that would be even worse and I can see why NASCAR made those decisions. One thing I can promise you is that NASCAR will not listen to your suggestions or mine on 99.9% of the subjects debated by the fans. But the NFL and the MLB could care less about sports fans suggestions either! Unlike the fan base of the stick and ball sports, however, us NASCAR fans are never happy. It is simply amazing that NASCAR grew from having races worth $2000 to win back in the day to races that are now worth $1.5 million today! If the NFL asked I do believe NASCAR fans would suggest they make their field sixty-yards in length or baseball two strikes you are out!
