Dissin' NASCAR Fans and Good to the Last Drop
Yes we are a spoiled lot as NASCAR fans in this day and age with non-stop coverage of our sport. But when the TV Guide tells me that NASCAR racing is supposed to be on Fox I want NASCAR to be on Fox! If the baseball game goes over its allotted time because of a rain delay of two hours then move the remainder of the baseball game to another channel! While I might be understanding when you join the race in lap three I am ticked off that you told me the race would go green at 53 after and you don't show it to me. There are certain traditions in our sport. Call we wacky but I love to see the National Anthem and the command to start engines. There is something magical about seeing the cars start to roll on pit lane and head on to the track. No matter how many races I watch I get that tingle down my spine when the lights go off on the pace car. The excitement builds as the announcers give us the vital stats of the race and then the pace car makes that hard left hand turn. Those final seconds before the green flag waves are always amazing. If all I miss is Chris Myers' nonsense because of a rogue baseball game then I will cheer. But when we miss our traditions that go with the start of a NASCAR race I am disappointed.
Race Grade: A
Racing at Phoenix is always entertaining! This is a one-mile short track with unique corners and multiple grooves for the drivers to pick to pass. The tension in those final laps as the race came to its conclusion earned this race a high grade!
F for Fox Sports
Yes I understand that to some sports fans the Yankees versus the Boston Red Sox is a religious experience. But you had plenty of time to send the baseball fans from other markets over to FX while the Boston and New York stations carried the end of the game on Fox. But why didn't NASCAR fans count? We want our races on time!
D for Matt Kenseth and the DeWalt Team
If you miss it by a little you miss it by a lot on this new car design. Last week it was Jeff Gordon's turn to have a race he would like to forget. This week Matt Kenseth had a car that was plain evil. Then Kenseth made a bad day worse by hitting the wall and sending his weekend spiraling out of control.
C for Sam Hornish Jr
Saying this has been a rough rookie season for Sam Hornish Jr might be one of the great understatements in recent years. But at Phoenix International Raceway Hornish found a way get a decent finish after a poor qualifying effort.
B for Mark Martin
It sure looked like Mark Martin was about to pull off the major upset and win in the US Army No. 8 car. If the racing Gods had only given us one more caution we might be talking about that amazing win at Phoenix by Martin. This team has been strong no matter which of the two-headed driving team is in the seat.
A for Jimmie Johnson
This was not your usual fuel mileage win because Jimmie Johnson had the car to beat most of the day. An uncharacteristically bad decision not to pit ended up putting Johnson mid-pack and in a heap of traffic. But Chad Knaus would grab victory from the jaws of defeat with his gutsy call to stay out and win this one on gas mileage. Look out NASCAR fans…this team could go on a winning streak!
