NASCAR Invents New Definition for Insanity
Dennis Michelsen

NASCAR Invents New Definition for Insanity The new and improved (?) NASCAR schedule for 2018 is out and the folks in Daytona have sure shaken things up. Even stranger than all of the strange changes are the fact that so many covering the sport are applauding NASCAR for trying something to add excitement to the series. Good old Albert Einstein famously said, “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting different results.” Apparently these new NASCAR changes...

Is NASCAR Still Bigger Than The Drivers?
Mike Harper - SOZ

I remember the days when the very first thing to do each morning was to visit the JAYSKI web site to find out what the latest rumors were in NASCAR. Back then the “Silly Season Site” was truly the must read for driver rumors. Even drivers used the site to find out about other drivers or rumors about themselves. And while the JAYSKI site is still very relevant to this day and a must visit for me, the silly season...

Was the Daytona 500 Rigged?
Mike Harper - SOZ

Social media went crazy after Kurt Busch won the 59th running of the Daytona 500. Surprisingly it wasn’t because angry fans dislike Kurt Busch, but because his sponsor Monster Energy is also the title sponsor for the Cup Series – NASCAR’s elite racing series. Before I give you a truthful and serious answer to the “rigged” question, allow me to address the following questions from the Daytona 500 weekend; Did Brian France really lose it during the drivers meeting? It’s...

Is Shaming Fans Good for NASCAR?
Mike Harper - SOZ

Call me crazy but I thought fans were important to NASCAR. How many times in the past did we hear “without the fans we couldn’t do what we love to do” when drivers or other NASCAR personalities talked specifically about the fan base? I would imagine having and retaining fans would be an important component to the success of the sport, which has me perplexed (I said it) on why NASCAR would allow employees and the sport’s paid media to...

Where Have the NASCAR Critics Gone?
Mike Harper - SOZ

Statement about the future of the Thunder Crew Radio Show is at the bottom of this column… If you’ve followed NASCAR over the past five years you know without a doubt the times have changed. As I mentioned in ‘Did NASCAR Push Carl Edwards Away?’ the industry will continue to get smaller.  It’s not all bad and it’s not all NASCAR’s fault.  For example, the Internet and economic challenges from several years ago killed print media.  This caused the job...

NASCAR Discovers Cure for Insomnia
Dennis Michelsen

NASCAR racing used to be known for great side by side racing and frequent passes. Last Sunday night at Charlotte Motor Speedway we saw 600 miles of ho hum without a single pass for the lead during the race. Even the wonderful stat spinners at NASCAR couldn’t get excited about this box score that featured one driver leading 588 miles of the 600 raced. The good news is that NASCAR discovered a cure for insomnia and its called the Coke...
